‘Web 2 For Free’ could save you £1500
Today I gave a couple of workshops at NCVO that introduced some key Web 2 applications and tools.
It was pitched at people from voluntary organisations who wanted a better grasp on technology and ideas that have emerged over the last three years. The groups were not early adopters, but wanted a clear understanding of the fundamentals and examples of how VCS are exploiting services like YouTube.
Web services, not web destinations
I wanted to get across the trend away from having a website as a destination, to thinking of your online activities as services (with RSS, widgets etc.).
Low risk opportunities
If you’re a small organisation without management buy-in for these new-fangled ideas and without a hefty dev budget, you can stick your toe in the water by using Flickr, Slideshare, del.icio.us etc.
The presentation is above, and all the links are available under the del.icio.us tag "web-2-for-free-workshop". It’ll be interesting to see whether any of the participants comment on Slideshare or send me links via del.icio.us. I’m really hopeful that some people will start to try these things out next week, and it’s always interesting to hear about issues and concerns at the sharp end of VCS life. So if you were there, please add a comment to the presentation to say "hello"!
Everyone hates it and we all use it
Personally, I don’t like the phrase "Web 2", but it seems to have better penetration then "semantic web" or "rich Internet application". So we’re stuck with it for a couple of years.
About that £1500, Dave
OK so how do you save £1500 then? Microsoft Office + Photoshop + Acrobat Professional = £1500 give or take. Google Docs + Free Online Image Editing + Free Online PDF Creation = £0.
